“and kiss the seedlings”

BLK History Month - Nikki Giovanni | Smoothies with a cider base

The Poem

BLK History Month - Nikki Giovanni

If Black History Month is not
viable then wind does not
carry the seeds and drop them
on fertile ground
rain does not
dampen the land
and encourage the seeds
to root
sun does not
warm the earth
and kiss the seedlings
and tell them plain:
You’re As Good As Anybody Else
You’ve Got A Place Here, Too

The Beverage
Smoothies with a cider base

When I make smoothies at home, I usually use almond milk as my liquid base. Some people use orange juice. Bad coffee shops have like a blend that they just mix with ice. BUT. BUT. BUT. My personal choice of coffee shops here in Madison has a revelatory smoothie base: really good apple cider. It’s a game changer. Tangy, sweet-but-not-too-sweet, fresh, not overpowering, not too heavy. It’s so good. I’m sipping on spinach/mango/banana/cider right now and LOVING it. May need to try at home.
