“How 'bout some coffee?”

Goodtime Jesus - James Tate | Instant coffee with Chobani Sweet Cream creamer

The Poem
Goodtime Jesus - James Tate

Jesus got up one day a little later than usual. He had been dreaming so deep there was nothing left in his head. What was it? A nightmare, dead bodies walking all around him, eyes rolled back, skin falling off. But he wasn't afraid of that. It was a beautiful day. How 'bout some coffee? Don't mind if I do. Take a little ride on my donkey, I love that donkey. Hell, I love everybody.

The Beverage

Instant coffee with Chobani Sweet Cream creamer

I am also super into instant coffee. The only problem with instant coffee is that it is not very good. Chobani Sweet Cream creamer is very good. So I have found making the instant coffee and then adding the creamer makes it pretty good. It’s easy, and I can have it at my leisure. Weird times, but this is an extremely normal coffee drink.

Apparently, dalgona whipped coffee, which I had one time at a weird coffee place, is a big thing on Tik Tok right now. I do not have Tik Tok, and I was not aware. But basically, dalgona is instant coffee whipped with sugar and poured over milk, so I might try to adapt that and have it tomorrow. That is not an extremely normal coffee drink.

About this poem: I read it for the first time this morning, in Matthew Ogle’s wonderful newsletter Pome. I gasped. I loved it immediately and immensely for so so many reasons and have been thinking about it all day. I think it is the perfect poem for Holy Week. I would LOVE to talk about this poem on the phone with you or text about it or email about it.
