“or one bird-weight”

Thin - Kay Ryan | Anything That Feels Like Indulgence

The Poem

Thin - Kay Ryan

How anything
is known
is so thin—
a skin of ice
over a pond
only birds might
confidently walk
upon. A bird's
worth of weight
or one bird-weight
of Wordsworth.

The Beverage

Anything That Feels Like Indulgence

For me, this is the point of the fancy beverage: feeling indulgent but not too indulgent.

A savored glass of wine in the bath.

A large-format beer split between two glasses.

A cold-pressed juice first thing in the morning.

A latte instead of a drip coffee.

A milkshake!

An order of bottled water at a restaurant.

A mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows!!

These are simple things. They won’t ruin a diet. They won’t break your budget. But they will make you feel a little more well-cared-for. A bit luxurious.

I want to know what your indulgent beverage is this week. I tell you mine every week. Your turn.
